This canvas was painted from a photograph of a crashing wave captured on the rocks near Falmouth. In the far distance, you can spot a red cargo ship, leading the eye into the possibilities beyond.

I used the technique of a palette knife and sponge to create an impasto for the foaming water, adding additional flicks and flecks so that the splashes and spume literally jump off the canvas. This way, it captures the dramatic movement of the waves that hit the rocks even on a clear summer's day when the rest of ocean is fairly calm.

Although the painting is predominantly in turquoises and blues, there is some subtle pink colouration that pulls through into the whites of the wave foam, intensifying the energy and vibrancy of the whole.

This painting is on a deep canvas, set 2" off the wall. It is the perfect size for rooms that might not have too much wall space and where 80cm is large enough to look dominant.
